‘MOURNING IN AMERICA’ EXHIBIT OPENING JULY 4
AT THE RONALD REAGAN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY & MUSEUM

WHAT:
On July 4th, 2004, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum will mark the end of the official 30 days of mourning by opening a memorial exhibit on the passing of the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan. Titled Mourning in America, the multifaceted presentation draws upon the incredible public outpouring of sympathy to the Reagan family and the respect shown for the former commander in chief, as well as highlights of the private moments of his wife and children. Open July 4th through November 11th, 2004, Mourning in America showcases the official ceremonies recently viewed the world over.

A few of the items on display include:

  • Examples of the vast number of gifts and cards sent to the Reagan Library since June 5th
  • The black velvet-draped catafalque used in Simi Valley for the president’s repose (fashioned after the one used for Abraham Lincoln in 1865) on June 7th and 8th
  • Reagan’s favorite riding boots that were placed backwards in the stirrups of the riderless horse led to the Capitol on June 9th
  • The flag that flew over the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan (CVN76) on June 5th
  • The spent cartridges from the three volleys of musketry and the shell casings from the 21-gun salute during the Reagan Library’s funeral services on June 11th
