Medal of Honor: Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self Sacrifice
Friday, February 24, 2012

The Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in partnership with the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation is proud to present:

Medal of Honor
Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self Sacrifice
Part of our acclaimed Speaker Series for Students
at the
Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum
Friday, February 24th, 2012 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan spoke before the Annual Convention of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. He said, “The price of freedom is high, but never more costly than the loss of freedom. And freedom, we must always remember, is never more than one generation away from extinction. Each generation must do whatever is necessary to preserve it and pass it on to the next, or it will be lost forever.”

Few Americans have sacrificed as much to preserve our freedom as the recipients of the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor. In this Speaker Series for Students event, a panel of four Medal of Honor recipients will share their amazing stories of bravery and sacrifice and explore the concepts of Courage, Commitment, Sacrifice, Patriotism, Integrity and Citizenship. Following the panel discussion, students in the audience will have a chance to pose questions and share their thoughts with these heroes.

Seating for this event is limited, and there will be a lottery to award seats.*

Lottery for this event closes Friday, January 20th.

Medal of Honor: Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice Webcast Registration
Friday, February 24, 2012

On February 24, 2012, from 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM, you can join thousands of teachers and students across the country by tuning in for a live webcast of Medal of Honor: Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice, part of the acclaimed Speaker Series for Students at the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. This remarkable panel will feature four of America’s greatest heroes and role models discussing how their stories of bravery act as a call to service in general. Classrooms from across the country can submit questions online to:

  • Walter Ehlers (World War II): Received the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 9-10 June 1944, near Goville, France.
  • Patrick Brady (Vietnam): While serving in the Republic of Vietnam, Brady commanded a UH-1H ambulance helicopter, volunteered to rescue wounded men from a site in enemy held territory which was reported to be heavily defended and to be blanketed by fog.
  • Bruce Crandall (Vietnam): On 14 November 1965 Major Crandall completed a total of 22 flights, most under intense enemy fire, retiring from the battlefield only after all possible service had been rendered to the Infantry battalion. His actions provided critical resupply of ammunition and evacuation of the wounded.
  • Salvatore Giunta (Afghanistan): Specialist Giunta's unwavering courage, selflessness, and decisive leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon's ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American soldier from the enemy.
